I highly recommend using the guard when slicing anything. This mandoline was purchased as a gift for my brother who does a lot of cooking. It's pretty easy to use and the blades are incredibly sharp. Changing out each blade whenever you would like a different cut is not as convenient as simply turning a dial to change it on other models. However, I'm quite satisfied with the product overall and I believe it's a good value.
The only thing I have had a little trouble with is creating thick slices of sweet potato -- but with a little practice even those became easy to make. But I was always frightened away by reviews from people who had cut themselves and/or suffered some sort of slicing injury. I have wanted a mondoline slicer for quite some time as I cook a lot of vegetables. Unit is easy to clean -- but again -- be careful. True, this slicer is VERY sharp. But if you follow the directions, always use the safety features and use your brain, this slicer will be a welcome kitchen addition. I would never let children use this slicer. Best part about this item is the quality delivered for the price.
I also sliced an apple and an orange. Tonight I sliced up 3 in about 5 minutes. I julienned a few potatoes both thick and thin. I've never really been in to kitchen gadgets, but I do cook a lot of vegetables and get sick of constantly chopping and slicing for stir-fry and steamed veggies. As far as cleanup, it's just a quick rinse under hot running water and then return it to the holder, that couldn't be easier. I normally allow 30 minutes to make sauteed zucchini, 10 of that to properly cut the vegetables.
The thin julienne potatoes were amazing in their uniformity of shape and size.
I also sliced a few zucchinis for dinner.
All the cuts for vegetables look very, very nice.
I just got this Mandoline this evening and have done a lot of experimenting.
It saved me so much time, my veggies were ready before the chicken.
I am so impressed with this gadget.
It slices evenly which means all your slices are cooked through at the same time.
The presentation is very professional looking when you use this slicer. It is a little medieval and scary looking, but if you're careful and always use the veggie holder that comes with it you should be fine.
I foresee myself using this daily for pretty much every meal.
I purchased it as a gift. So if you have small carrots, radishes, etc don't even think about using this. It is pretty much useless for anything other than the largest vegetables. Once it gets to about a 1/2" thick it fails and fails miserably. Too bad I have to give it one star, it does not deserve any. Worst purchase I've ever made on Amazon.
The blades are VERY SHARP, so care is needed when utilizing. The "thin cut" blade was awesome for slicing. This little slicer is very handy kitchen aid. You must hold the slicer diagonally with one hand while slicing with the other. I also haven't been able to figure out how to shred and dice. This thing has the ability to quickly and cleanly remove a finger. The 2 different blades included, offer a "thin cut" and a "thick cut".
However, my son is the french fry King, and the "thick cut" julienne blade produced cuts that I consider very thin (the image of the potatoes in the bowl are the result of the thick blade). It slices quickly and cleanly. Perfect thin slices of onion, cucumber, and tomatoes for deli sandwiches and salads. It suits its purpose; however, I quickly noticed that this particular model does not have a slicer stand. It's not a HUGE inconvenience, but I'd prefer the model with the stand that opens up from the rear. I wish the blades were adjustable as with the Mandoline Pro or there were different blade options available for purchase. I do love the slicer and its ease of use, but I think I'll need to upgrade to the Pro for the extra $10 and see everything this tool has to offer.
